dear Gunafa Netizen,
it is quite some weeks ago, that
STR sent out the last fahrplan.
the reason for that is easy.
we used the summer pause for a fahrplan break.
and more or less for a webcast break, too.
it was a pause for realtime netart in a way.
we wanted to feel -
- - the feeling of missing it.
In our opinion as mediartists, realtime should not become a normal
everyday experience. for sure that would be too early in 2002. It should
still stay exclusively rare. the internet these days could be seen as an
abused place/thing/entity for a schreibstube or a dustbin for digital
garbage, as well as a place/thing/entity with lots of unused
possibilities. where netart, digital audio-visual art needs time to
develop.
it needs breaks, offline moments - to be recreated. all the discussions
on netart versus so called normal art as maybe seen on the documenta 11s
of this world, are important. when the talk is about black cubes and video
art at the documentas, the museums, I want to put an emphasis on how long
it took for the artworld to realize/accept videoart, or photography
before. So I think, all our new, fluid, digital netart needs- is time. and
we as the artists who create it, need that, too. to enjoy that process,
without having to be involved too much in a programming process, in an
interpretation process, and so on.
while we wanted the realtime-pause, these summer weeks were no break for
<best of webcasting on TV>, on HR/late lounge. and the experience out of
it is: very interesting to produce/remix/rededit former webcasts for
fullscreen TV. a challenge to work in that <ultimate>, established
resolution. and I have to admit that it is nice to switch on TV, zap
around, and come to Station Rose art.
besides that we are intensely planning our "9.11. Netzwerke" congress,
happening on that date in frankfurt´s kuenstlerhaus mousonturm. more on
that soon.

Fresh perspectives from the Arab world
New series of Arab videotapes
Opens Sept 8 in Vancouver
Runs: Sept 8-9, 22-23, and Oct 13-14.
VANCOUVER - Starting on September 8, a new series at the Pacific Cinematheque
brings together a startling array of voices that are not often heard: those
of Arab artists. Curated by Vancouver-based artist Jayce Salloum, the series
"in/tangible cartographies: new arab video" aims to shed new light on the
experiences of people living in Palestine, North Africa and the Middle East.

Highlighted works include:
a. Award Winning Palestinian Filmmaker Elia Suleiman's, "Cyber Palestine",
the tale of a modern day Mary and Joseph, two Palestinian returnees living in
Gaza, and their confrontation with the Israeli occupation.
b. Belkacem Hadjadj's, "A Woman Taxi Driver in Sidi Bel-Abbes", about the
only woman taxi driver in a traditional Algerian town divided by extremist
political violence. The 52 minute video was voted Best Documentary Film at
Qatar's Arab Screen Independent Film Festival.
c. Mounir Fatmi's, "Survival Signs", a fascinating contemporary video about
the language's distingrating ability to communicate. It has been programmed
at film and video festivals in Toronto, Amsterdam, Brussels, Tokyo,
Casablanca and Locarno.
The series will be followed by the Oct 20 screening of Salloum's ongoing
untitled project, with the artist in attendance. untitled was the work at he
centre of last September's controversial Arab-Canadian art exhibit in
Ottawa's Museum of Civilization, when the Museum sought to postone "The Lands
Within Me," a large exhibition of works by Arab-Canadian artists, after the
September 11 attacks.

In the production area of the Laboratory it will present the latest developments on the ARS BOX and more. The Futurelab is proud to announce that Adrian Cheok from Singapore and Hirokazu Kato from Hiroshima City University will join the Exhibition and that Prof. Kato will show a new version of the well known Augmented Reality project Magic Book employing natural feature tracking instead of using markers.

An ongoing multi-channel video installation continuing Jayce Salloum's series
of projects addressing social and political realities and representations. It
focuses on borders, nationalisms, movements, and subjectivities, and the
conditions of living between polarities of culture, geography, history, and
ideology. This installation takes the approach of an active site, a living
archive for the viewer to spend time in. Tapes presented were produced in
and/or around Lebanon, Palestine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia,
Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Austria, France, US, and Canada and points in-between.
Both audio and visual are presented in a setting that encourages viewers to
relax and engage with the material at will.

Call for Papers for special sesion at the American Comparative Literature
Association to be held at Cal State San Marcos in North San Diego County
April 4-6, 2003.

NMEDIAC (New Media and Culture), a journal out of U North Carolina
Chapel-Hill, is sponsoring a special session on new media/culture
at the April meetings of the American Comparative Literature
Association meetings in San Marcos. The session will include three
panels, a total of 9-12 scholars, writers and artists, that will meet
over a two day period on the topic of new media. The sessions are
intended to result in a journal issue dedicated to the topic.
The session panels on new media will explore questions of digital
poetics, genre, and the role of narrative models and metaphors
from non-digital media, such as those of literature, film and
performance on electronic writing and art. We hope to speculate on
what happens to once vital metaphors and genres as media change (how
the role of sci-fi and cyber-punk in cultural discourse in the 1980s has
evolved in this era, for example). A special invitation is
extended to digital artists and writers to join in a round table
discussion about the peotics of hypertext and digital art. We also
invite papers that consider how digital media compares to
other era's marked by the invention of a new medium - the press,
photography, or film, for example.

ARTIST BIOS:
JOSH RUSSELL::::
Josh russell is a biochemist/sound artist from san diego. His work
traverses the ground between conceptual electo-acoustic and pop. Inspired
by the soft incidental noises that one normally filters out he layers and
treats these sounds juxtaposing them with modulated tones.
He is also the label owner of bremsstrahlung recordings which published it's
second lowercase-sound compilation in august. Upcoming releases this fall
included two double 3" CD splits with francisco lopez/civyiu kkliu and radu
malfatti/ilya monosov.
CIVYIU KKLIU:::::
Civyiu Kkliu is an artist making sound works described as intricate,
indifferent, forceful.
Presenting with many artists including the 23Five Organization's Infrasound,
Dr. Dajuin Yao—pioneer in Chinese computer music and deconstruction/concrete
poetry, Akira Rabelais, Josh Russell, Shuttle358, and Steve Roden—civyiu
kkliu works to make spaces dense with sound and visual structures that give
rise to acute aesthetic effects.
Works by the artist are available or forthcoming on: STAALPLAAT/bake records
(Netherlands), Banned Productions (Los Angeles), Simballrec Records (Los
Angeles), bremsstrahlung (San Diego); and recording “5 at 2” will be a
component of a larger piece devised and commissioned by artist Ilya Monosov.
ILYA MONOSOV::::
Ilya Monosov works with objects. Remaining far away from the surreal, he
brings out a physical music from the sensual relationships formed by
"things" around him. Works include collaborations with Andrew Deutsch and
Tony Conrad, an upcoming LP with some contributions from Deutsch and Pauline
Oliveros, a box with poet Bob Cobbing, and many numerous collaborations with

Artist recently transplanted to Los Angeles from the NYC metro-area.
Previously worked w/ Kunstradio (Vienna) as a web artist and at THE THING
(bbs.thing.net) as a video/sound curator. He has organized streaming
networked events in Austria and Syracuse, NY. His work has been show both
online and off at venues such as THE THING, Galerie Hubert Winter (Vienna),
Extended Radio Festival (Latvia), PRIX ITALIA (As part of a Kunstradio team)
and Syracuse University, where he recently graduated w/ a degree in Media
Art.
